UNH Professor Nina Gatzoulis Receives International Award
(HCS)--World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) recently conferred its Woman of the Year Award upon Professor Nina Gatzoulis of the University of New Hampshire. One of only 7 outstanding recipients worldwide to receive this honor, Professor Gatzoulis is the first woman in northern New England selected for it.

Her outspoken advocacy for the Pan-Macedonian Association of the US, as the group's tireless president, has earned her accolades from members and friends of the organization. Gatzoulis has been a frequent visitor and advocate in Washington, raising awareness of critical Macedonian issues. Observers have remarked that her persistence has contributed to positive changes in US foreign policy on FYROM.


No stranger to dedication and hard work, Gatzoulis has developed and expanded the Modern Greek program at the University of New Hampshire over the last decade.  Her solid pedagogical techniques, coupled with personal concern for the academic progress of every student, have proved a winning strategy for the university community. Enrollments have increased steadily under her leadership. Within a short period of time, additional levels of language were added to the program, leading to a full, four-year program in Modern Greek Studies at the university.

She has also worked closely with colleagues in the Classics Program of the Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Department of UNH to support all Greek studies. Receiving a grant from the Christos and Mary Papoutsy Charitable Foundation, Nina Gatzoulis helped to organize a new chapter of Paideia to support Greek studies at Durham. Not only has Paideia of New Hampshire contributed regularly to scholarship awards conferred upon her students, but it has also brought performances of Classical Greek drama to New Hampshire and lectures by internationally recognized scholars to the campus.
