The Hellenic Historical and Genealogical Association was incorporated in the state of New Hampshire on May 25, 2000 by Mary Papoutsy with a mission to promote the importance of Greek ancestry and history.

Citing a strong and growing popularity nationwide in researching family roots, Mrs. Papoutsy states, "There is a great need for systematic documentation of the lives and contributions to society of Greek ancestors and the Hellenic Historical and Genealogical Association will strive to provide an organizational framework for assistance in this area." The association offers free lectures and workshops on conducting Hellenic genealogical searches in the United States and in Greece.

In additional to its educational component, the group also conducts research and amasses data about the lives of early immigrants in preparation for publication.

HHGA has been a member affiliate of the National Genealogical Society.

					Data Collection

HHGA encourages interested persons to undertake data collection projects to document the presence and lives of Greek immigrants and Greek-Americans. Greek-language skills may be helpful for some projects, but no special training or background in genealogical research are necessary:

							- Transcriptions of Orthodox Cemeteries and Greek Sections of Public Cemeteries

							 - Transcribing Greek Church records into English

							 - Indexing and Abstracting Naturalization Records

							 - Oral History Interviews

							 - Microfilming of Records

							 - Indexing and Abstracting Obituaries From Newspapers

For additional information about these projects or to volunteer for one of them, contact the staff at the Hellenic Historical and Genealogical Association office.

								Family Origins Database

HHGA is beginning a database to assist members with genealogical research. Family surnames and geographical locations can be submitted to HHGA for inclusion into the database.
